Daily Paper: Acta Non Verba

This is a piece for the upcoming S/S 2011 collection by my creative family Daily Paper. Acta Non Verba is Latin for ‘less talk, more action’. My good friend Yoji has a tattoo on her arm with the same sentence, so she kind of inspired us to make this graphic. The graphic features the Daily Paper spears and the infinity symbol, stating our ambition to leave a legacy. The lyric “From the womb to the tomb, presume the unpredictable” comes from the Nas song ‘Verbal Intercourse’ and stands for the fact that we believe that anything is possible in life.

The Right Brigade Foundation is a non-profit organisation founded by Christopher Di Nunzio. He organizes workshops (dance, art, music and so on) for children in third world countries. He approached Daily Paper for a collaborative artwork to raise money for workshops he’s organizing in Haiti. The artwork I made was an abstract version of so called Vodou-flags, created by priests in Haiti for all sorts of religious purposes. The artwork also features the map of Haiti beneath the heart.

L’Afrique Som Systeme

My frequent collaborator Asheru and me are always sending each other music we love. When we had the chance to spin some tunes at the PXA-tournament, we didn’t think twice to say ‘YES!’. It was our second time behind the wheels of steel, but we got so many good responses that we decided to really get to practicing and see where we could take this musical adventure. We’ve played in Berlin and Paris recently and we’re planning to take our sound wherever people will have us. Because of the music we play (electronic dancehall. african tunes and some hip-hop) we decided to call ourselfs “L’Afrique Som Systeme”, a little tribute to our friends of Buraka Som Sistema. I’ve made a logo for our little soundsystem and an artwork to accompany our first mixtape, called “the Jupa tape”. Have a look and listen below!

TQS (The Quintessential Society)

“The Quintessential Society” is an initiative by my good friends Asheru Al-haag, Dennis Swiatkowski and me. We’re big fans of magazine’s like Monocle and GQ, but always thought there was a lack of online presence from those magazines. What we’re trying to do, is create a “guide to become a modern gentleman.” That means shooting spreads on sartorial style, making tutorial-video’s on how to wear a tie and writing guides on where to go in big cities like Paris, Berlin and New York. We’ve just came up with this concept and are in the process of putting together the first online edition of our online magazine. I’ve already designed a logo, and we’ve already made a little teaser which was shot & directed by Dennis.

Filling Pieces A/W 2010 Lookbook

Filling Pieces is a footwear label founded by Guillaume ‘Gsrnn’ Chin. At only 19 years old he started with one model, and now, two years later, Filling Pieces sells 3 trademark models in different colourways: The Low Top, Desert Boot and the High Top. The Autumn/Winter 2010 collection was photographed during a sunny day in Amsterdam by Dennis Swiatkowski aka GYPROT. I put everything together and made a little artwork for the cover. Daily Paper Presents…

I’ve mentioned my creative family (Daily Paper) before. Sunday the 11th of April we saw how our first real project for an external client came to fruition. In celebration of their 5th anniversary, Sugar Factory approached us to organize an event that would merge fashion and music. In addition to that, they asked us to organize a little exposition in the smoking area that would be there for at least 1 month. After a brainstorm session we decided to build the evening around the sentence ‘Young take on classic style’.

We called in the help of our more that talented friends, from fashion designers to photographers to help us out, and did they! I can honestly say that I’ve never put in so much work for a single project in my life, but it was worth every minute. We got quite a bit of media coverage. Local TV-station AT5 did a small item (Dutch) on us and our name was mentioned in newspapers Het Parool and De Pers.

To give our visitors something to remember us by, we produced a little booklet. Copywriting done by Asheru, design done by yours truly. Download the complete booklet here.

Wapen Jezelf

Wapen Jezelf is an initiative by the local government of Amsterdam Zuid-Oost. After multiple shooting incidents, the powers-to-be decided that enough was enough. They approached Merge Media to develop a campaign that would improve and intensify communication with the youth of Amsterdam Zuid-Oost. The result is Wapen Jezelf (Arm Yourself). A catching name for a campaign against violence. My part in all of this was to make the visuals appeal to the targeted group.

When I’m not working on cool projects by myself, I’m probably working on something epic with my 4 good friends Hussein Suleiman, Asheru Alhaag, Hussein Yusuf and Jefferson Osei. The 5 of us form a creative family called Daily Paper. It all started with some t-shirts with our old logo on them, that we gave out to friends and family. Now we’re in the process of developing season 1 of our clothing line called “D.Paper”.

We’re secretly planning to take over the world, but we don’t really talk about that in public. If you want to read what we DO talk about, check out www.dailypaper.nl. Design not done by me, but I’m working on a new and improved website.

Ichiban Dojo

The Ichiban Dojo is located inside Sportcentrum Hollander. It’s a brand new dojo, owned by Loek Hollander. I had a lot of fun working on this project. From stumbling upon a beautiful picture of Mount Fuji, to using that same picture to create an authentic Japanese vibe inside. Check it out!
